29 Jan 2019: Saint Luz

Image
Hey everyone! Luz's baptism Its a great day in Vegas today, and its been a great week! Highlight was Luz getting baptized on Saturday! It was such a blessing to teach her! There were over 40 people in attendance at her baptism, and in the circle when she got confirmed on Sunday, there was probably 15-20 men! Record breaking I'm sure. Luz bore her testimony at the end of her baptism, and she started to cry when she talked about us missionaries teaching her. Its truly been a blessing.  When her sister in law gave a talk at her baptism about the Holy Ghost, she shared the scripture in the Book of Mormon: Mosiah 3:19, where it talks about becoming a saint through Christ. She called her "Saint Luz."  It was awesome. Sunday I met someone in one of my wards who is from my ward in Eugene, Oregon, the Eugene 3rd ward. We talked about it for a while, which was pretty awesome. We had a mission tour again this week, which was really cool. President C...

22 Jan 2019: Sing Us a Song, You're the Elote Man

Hola todos! Its been a great week! So great, that I have to make a real, conscious effort to remember what happened this week. I am trying to restart my old tradition of naming my weekly emails after classic rock lyrics, and this week's email is the start of that. One thing I love about Vegas, is that there are three things that are always consistent no matter where you go in the city: Missionaries, taco trucks, and elote men. If you don't know what elote is, look it up, its amazing. Dont worry, no ducks were harmed in the making of elote. It is amazing, especially with chilli on it. We were biking, and ran into a member of my old area, Washington Avenue, who sells elote, and he gave us two ears each of it for free. It was SOO GOOD, with questionable health benefits, but to be honest, anything unhealthy I eat, I burn off during the course of the day. I look the same weight that I was when I left for my mission, but I have actually put on about 27 pounds the la...

15 Jan 2019: Kick Back with Some Baloot and Albertsons Cookies

Image
Hola todos! Another week has come and gone in Sin City for Elder Lovell. Many things have happened. I hit six months on my mission on Friday. I had something called baloot on Tuesday (look it up, I don't want to explain it to you, but it was surprisingly good) and today I discovered that there are Albertsons stores all around me, full of the delicious cookies that I grew up on in Oregon. That was a heavenly experience. I will attach a video of my baloot experience. When Liz came for her baptismal interview, she brought four baloot for Elder Carpio, myself, and Elder Díaz and Elder Dillender. We had exchanges with the zone leaders. That was awesome because I got to be back with my trainer again. Just like old times.  We had a really awesome dinner with a family in the ward and Luz. Our ward mission leader for Christy Lane ward and his wife were also there. Luz is getting baptized the 26th, and she is sooo awesome. We talked to her about the temple, and how t...

8 Jan 2019: Under the Sea

Happy Tuesday everyone!  (Garfield quote for you cultured folks)  Maybe that's why P-day was switched to Tuesday for our mission, because Garfield hates Mondays. Just kidding, it's actually so we can go to the temple.  As for the title of this week's chapter in the Stupendous Adventures of Elder Lovell in Sin City, we start out with a strapping young lad, who, when he got called to serve a mission in the States, breathed a sigh of relief, because he knew he wouldn't have to eat any outlandishly bizarre foods, as do some missionaries who serve elsewhere in the world.... Boy, was he wrong.  That strapping young man happened to be the author of this chapter, me. I thought when I got called to serve in the United States, I wouldn't have to worry about eating bizarro food. I was very wrong. This past week, I got to eat a certain sea creature that rhymes with the word Sid.  Yes I ate a squid.  It wasn't bad. But it wasn't amaz...

1 Jan 2019: Is it possible to learn a third language while on the mission?

Image
Basi kila mtu! That's hello everyone in Swahili. The reason for that and the title, is because we are now teaching a family very recently from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Only the kids speak English. Think I can email Alex Boye for Swahili lessons? Elder Palmer, Me, Marcus, Elder Carpio (my comp), Elkder Castañeda We had a baptism this past week! Marcus is a 16 year old kid who has been taught for awhile. He is awesome, and also very tall. My poor companion had to baptize him four times, because his whole body didn't go all the way under at first. Also he had trouble with the words. Elder Carpio inspires me in how hard he works in learning English.  This past week I had a car to do district leader administrative things, which was cool. I haven't driven since I left on my mission, and so it was fun getting behind the wheel again. After Marcus's baptism, I was supposed to conduct a baptismal interview for an other set of elders...
