25 Sept 2018: American Food is ... Boring
My shoes after a morning of proselyting. Literally some of my areas are that dusty. |
I have come to
make a culinary and cultural observation this past week. After a month
of almost exclusively Hispanic dinners, I have realized that American
food is just plain...boring. Compared to Hispanic food, which pops with
flavor, a cheeseburger or chicken sandwich from In N Out or Wendy's, has
no flavor. They still taste good, not a bad burger, but it's just
boring now! Oh well, I am going to eat purely Mexican food for the rest
of my life and be content with that and die happy.
This week has been a weird one and a fast one.
Some highlights were:
-met a member of the stake high council whose name is Tony Stark. No joke.
-Matt is still going on strong, we mentioned the fact that he could serve a mission in a year and he seemed interested by that!
a funny doorbell that pretty much sums up missionary life. |
-I
had pozole for the first time, which is a Mexican soup that was
inspired by God. Then we went to our actual dinner appointment, and I
barely had anything because the pozole filled me up.
-Ricardo
is doing awesome! He stopped drinking entirely, and is so excited to be
baptized. The other day he said that he can't wait to help out more in
the church, i.e. having a calling.
-Jovonie is also doing really well! He is more active in the YSA activities than most members.
-Thursday
morning we got a call from the Mayhews, recent converts in the ward.
They were very mad on the phone. One of the members that they had been
living with needed their stuff off of his property by a certain time.
Brother Mayhew then said that he has his legal team, the best in the
country working on this, so if they touch his stuff, his "legal team"
would take action. His "head lawyer" would be Johnnie Cochran, who was
the head of the defense of the OJ Simpson case. That would be pretty
cool if Johnnie Cochran had not passed away in 2005. Then Brother Mayhew
asked us to guard his stuff. At this point, as missionaries, we were
not allowed to get involved in anything involving legal procedures. It
was an interesting day.
-we met a Rastafarian guy. That was actually pretty cool, because we just shared our beliefs and he was a nice guy!
Wendy's receipt mishap. I wonder if she saw my nametag? |
-I
met a Cuban guy on splits (I was with a different missionary) and
understood him pretty well, which was surprising, because Cubans are
notorious for speaking at 10000000000mph.
-one of
the English speaking elders in my zone, elder day, could not stop
talking about how amazing Mexican food was. (He had just had his first Mexican member meal) he said he did not understand anything being said
at dinner, but the food was amazing.
-we went to a
less active member house, and talked to them. After a little bit, the
wife started yelling at her husband in Spanish, calling him a
"mentiroso" (a liar). Then she looked at us, and said "wait, you guys
don't speak Spanish right?" And we were like "well, we actually do, ha
ha" so that was fun.
- On my month mark in the
field on the 22nd, we were not even a quarter mile from our apartment,
and a Uhaul van sideswipes us! A worker totally didn't even see us, and
even though Elder Dillender swerved, the lady hit my side of the car! To
make a long story short, she wouldn't give her info to us. Then, while
we were waiting for the police at the Uhaul place, she left, and her
supervisor left! So when the cop finally got there, five hours later (no
joke, we were there from 10:15 to 3:15) the other driver, and everyone
who had been there at the time of the accident was gone! That was a
crazy day.
-that day we had a great lesson with a
guy named Juan Carlos and his friend Clarivel. They invited their
friends to listen to us too
Wal-Mart shenanigans. Apparently they are now selling McCafe candles |
It's been a crazy week, and it went by quick too!
One
more thing. Many of you have asked me if it would be alright to see me
while I am here in Vegas. My mission President has said that visit from
family and friends are not allowed. I love you all, but I need to obey
my President, and by extension, the Lord. "I must obey"- Nephi (a Book
of Mormon prophet)
Apparently one of the Wendy's workers is LDS too! |
Keep the emails coming!
Love you all!
